Scholarships for College

Paying for college is not easy, so every little bit can help. Here are three options available to members of the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters.

Every year, the Regional Council awards dozens of scholarships to children of members to help them pursue a post-secondary education.

Eligibility Requirements

The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters is taking applications for college scholarships for children dependents of our members. The number of scholarships will depend on the amount of money raised for the Scholarship Fund.

  • Scholarships are a one-time, $500 grant
  • Applicants must have a parent or guardian who is a member in good standing of a UBC Local within the NCSRCC jurisdiction who is participating in funds
  • Applicants must submit their previous post-secondary transcripts along with their application
  • The applicant must be enrolled full-time (12 credits) in an accredited post-secondary program. Checks will be released after documentation of successful completion of the academic semester

The deadline for applications is April 1, 2016. Completed applications must be returned to the NCSRCC office in Saint Paul, MN, or sent via email to ssteele@ncsrcc.org.

Scholarships

Thomas Verry Memorial Scholarship Fund

In 1992, Carpenters Local 1260 established a Scholarship Fund to encourage the dependants of its members to further their education, be it post-secondary, vocational, or trade apprenticeship.  In 1998, the Fund was renamed in memory of long-time member and former Business Representative Thomas Verry.

The scholarships can be used for books, tuition, or tools of the trade (in the case of apprenticeships).  Receipts must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee by July 1 each year, before grants will be made.

In 1998, the membership decided to modify the awarding process from a one-time grant of $250 available to those applicants deemed eligible by the Committee.   Currently yearly grants of $100, available to eligible applicants that can be renewed annually three times after the initial awarding for a total of $400, as long as the applicants remain in school and are deemed eligible by the Committee.

To be eligible for the Carpenters Local 1260 Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be the dependent of a Local 1260 member who’s been a member for two years and in Good Standing for the previous 12 month period
  • Be at least 17 years of age at the time of application
  • Must have maintained at least5 a 2.0 grade point average in high school
  • Must submit to the Committee a 250 word essay entitled “Why Organized Labor Must Survive beyond the Year 2020”.  The essay is necessary only for the initial grant, not the renewals
